Industry knowledge

In the field of oral health care, interdental brushes are specifically designed to address wide gaps between teeth that are difficult to reach with ordinary toothbrushes and dental floss. They are essential tools for periodontal care, orthodontic care, and bridge maintenance.Buletedan is committed to producing and providing high-quality, affordable and innovativeinterdental brushes.

1. Why are interdental brushes irreplaceable?
Interdental brushes were originally designed to effectively address interdental cleaning challenges in specific scenarios. Their main functions include:
Efficient cleaning of wide gaps: For wide gaps caused by gum recession, periodontal disease, naturally sparse teeth, or orthodontic treatment, dental floss cannot fully reach the tooth surfaces on both sides, reducing cleaning power. The interdental brush head perfectly fills the gaps and scrapes all around, making it far more efficient than dental floss.

Removing plaque from "wedge-shaped defects": Gum recession is often accompanied by "wedge-shaped defects" at the neck of the tooth. This recessed area has an irregular shape, and the small brush head of the interdental brush can precisely reach and clean it.

Maintaining Dental Restorations: For patients wearing bridges, crowns, or dental implants, the underside of the bridge and around the brackets, where the restoration meets the gums, are vulnerable to food and plaque buildup. Specific interdental brushes are officially recommended for cleaning these areas.

An Effective Tool for Cleaning During Orthodontics: When wearing fixed braces, cleaning around brackets, wires, and between teeth becomes particularly challenging. Interdental brushes can easily navigate between wires, effectively cleaning the sides of brackets and larger spaces between teeth.

Massaging the Gum: When used correctly, the gentle stimulation of the brush strands on the gums can provide a massage effect, promoting local blood circulation.

2. How Interdental Brushes Work
The working principle of an interdental brush is intuitive and efficient. A standard interdental brush consists of three parts:
Brush Head: The core component, made of densely wound, ultra-fine bristles, is compact and cylindrical, conical, or light-brush-shaped. The size is indicated by a "model" (e.g., 0.4mm, 0.7mm, 1.5mm, etc.). Wire/Plastic Shaft: Connects the brush head and handle. Early brush heads used exposed wire to facilitate interdental penetration. More products now use a plastic-wrapped, flexible shaft that maintains its shape without damaging tooth surfaces or roots, making it more suitable for those with metal allergies.
Handle: Provides a comfortable grip and facilitates application of force.

After selecting the appropriate brush head for the size of the interdental space, the user no longer needs to saw through it like flossing. Instead, gently and completely insert the brush head through the interdental space. Then, using two or three back-and-forth motions, use the bristles to scrape away plaque from the adjacent surfaces and gingival sulci on both sides of the interdental space. Once finished, remove the brush, rinse thoroughly, and move on to the next interdental space.

3. Diverse Product Options
Brush Head Shape:
Cylindrical: Uniform bristle length ensures uniform cleaning power, suitable for regular, medium-sized interdental spaces.
Conical: The brush head is narrow at the front and wide at the back, better accommodating the gradual increase in interdental space from front to back, offering excellent versatility. Light Brush: The brush head features a spherical shape, suitable for cleaning complex concave surfaces of crowns, around implant abutments, and beneath braces.

By Model Size:
Selectin Guideline: Choose the smallest size that fits your teeth. The brush head should easily fit between teeth, while the bristles should provide ample contact with the tooth surface, creating a noticeable friction.

Brush sizes range from fine to coarse (e.g., ISO standards range from 0.4mm to 2.0mm and above). It's usually necessary to purchase a combination pack to accommodate different tooth gaps. First-time users are advised to consult a dentist for professional size recommendations.

Brush Material:
Exposed Wire: Traditional and strong, but can scratch tooth roots or metal restorations if used improperly.
Plastic-Coated Soft Rod: Currently the mainstream and recommended choice. It's safe, flexible, and harmless to teeth, and can be bent to desired angles for better cleaning of posterior teeth.

4. Suitable Populations
If you fall into any of the following groups, then interdental brushes should be an essential part of your daily oral care routine:
Those with periodontal disease or gum recession
Those with naturally large gaps between teeth
Those undergoing orthodontic treatment
Those wearing bridges, crowns, or dental implants
Those who feel their interdental spaces are not thoroughly cleaned after regular flossing
